What do our Young Volunteers do?

Volunteering at the Egypt Centre is fun! As a young volunteer you will be a Gallery Assistant. This means you will be looking after our galleries, talking with visitors and demonstrating hands-on activities, such as mummification, to visitors! Occasionally you might get the opportunity to handle some of the objects in the cases as well.

While there are adults supervising, you are responsible for delivering activities on a Saturday, and you represent the Egypt Centre, so you are in a unique position. No other museum in the country is run by young people so completely

What can we offer you?

The Egypt Centre young volunteer programme offers young people the chance to be part of an award-winning volunteer programme and to help in one of the few Egyptology museums in the UK!

  • Get some work experience
  • Attend fun workshops, learning all about ancient Egypt
  • Work with other young people
  • Make new friends
  • Build your confidence
  • Become part of the family of volunteers at the museum

Can I be a volunteer?

Yes!!! Anyone over the age of 10 can volunteer. You don’t need to know anything about Ancient Egypt, or museums, but you do need an interest in history and heritage, and like working with lots of different people!

The Egypt Centre specialises in working with, and welcoming,  people of all different abilities. If you think you would like to volunteer, but would like to discuss your individual needs, just call the Museum Volunteer Manager, who will be happy to help!

When can I volunteer?

The young volunteer programme runs on a Saturday from 10-4. Normally, you must complete a minimum of 3 hours, on a Saturday, every fortnight (although we are flexible), but you can do more! If you are under 12, you are limited to 3 hours per day. You can even volunteer in your holidays once you have finished your induction period!

How do I get involved?

It’s really easy to get involved! Download and fill in a  young volunteer application form/consent form below. Post both to us, or drop them into the museum, and we will process your application. If you are over 16, you will need 1 character reference.

Because we are such a popular program, we regret we can only accept 35 young people at one time. This means we often have a waiting list. Please don’t be upset if you are put on a waiting list, most people are only on it for 3 months before a place becomes available!
