The Egypt Centre has been open to the public since 1998. The Museum is accredited with the Museum Archives and Libraries Division.

The Museum displays ancient Egyptian artefacts within two galleries (House of Life and House of Death)

Annual visitor numbers are approx 17,000-20,000.

Annual visitors in organised education groups are approx. 3,000-4,000. This includes primary schools, secondary schools, SEN groups, home education groups, further and higher education and adult education groups.

Group leaders should contact the Museum in advance to discuss their needs. All group visits must be booked in advance. We provide opportunities for liaison between your group leaders and Museum staff. If you require a preliminary visit, please note we are open to the public 10am until 4.00pm Tuesday to Saturday when you are welcome to visit and look around.

The Egypt Centre is located on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus and therefore meets all the university statutory Safety, Health, Environment and Fire regulation requirements. This includes Health and Safety at Work Act and Fire Safety Order.

The University has a Health and Safety Policy as well as a Safeguarding Policy in place.

Written emergency procedures are including in our Health and Safety Documentation, which is available on request.

vacuation procedures are in place and Fire Exits clearly marked. Fire alarms are tested on Tuesday mornings between 8.00-9.30am, on hearing the alarm at any other time visitors should leave via the marked Fire Exits and assemble as directed by staff.

The Museum has an additional Access policy and Health and Safety policy available on request.

Facilities for visitors with additional needs

  • Wheelchair access is possible in all museum areas,
  • Lift available for first floor,
  • Torches and magnifying glasses are available to use,
  • Pupils with hearing/sight impairment can sit at the front of workshop presentations (please notify requirements) and our lead speakers can be given additional aids from your institution (eg. hearing loop),
  • Disabled toilets on both floors,
  • Please discuss any further additional needs requirements in advance.

Covid-19 Safety Guidelines: The Egypt Centre is working within Welsh Government Guidelines to keep our visitors and staff safe. The following guidelines are in place in the Museum to keep you safe:

  • Due to the size of our galleries, we kindly ask that adults wear a mask to help protect our staff and visitors. All Museum staff will be masked unless exempted.
  • Hand sanitising stations are available for visitors and staff.
  • We have further increased our hygiene regime,
  • We have a lot of interactive exhibits at the Museum – we will be taking special care to clean these regularly to keep visitors safe,

First aid: There is a First Aid point in the office and gift shop area of the museum, and qualified first aiders as well as a First Response Team are on site during opening hours. Alert a volunteer or a member of staff if First Aid is required and they will notify a First Aider.

Public Liability Insurance: We have appropriate public liability insurance (£50,000.000). A copy of our insurance certificate is available for inspection. 

Medical needs: Group leaders should notify Egypt Centre staff if any member of your party is known to have any specific or serious medical condition. This should also be noted on the booking form so we can notify members of staff and volunteers in advance of your visit.

Staff Identification: All staff, who will come into contact with your school, wear a badge stating their name. The staff and adult volunteers hold fully enhanced DBS certificates. All volunteers have signed a volunteer agreement. 

CCTV is used in the museum for the safety of our visitors, staff and collections.


 Staff and volunteers: The Learning and Engagement Officer manages our school programme. Our workshop leaders are staff or volunteers who have all received full training to undertake this role. They are regularly assessed by the Learning Officer. All staff have agreed roles. The Safeguarding Policy is accessible in the main office and all staff and volunteers have received safeguarding training. We have a dedicated Safeguarding Officer who is responsible for this. Staff and volunteers of the Egypt Centre are not responsible for the discipline of the group. Visiting teachers/leaders or parents are expected to supervise the children at all times.

Teacher/pupil ratios: Appropriate ratios of children to adults are needed for the group overall and for specific activities. Due to the hand-on nature of the activities children are divided into groups to undertake the activities. Class bookings of under 40 will be split into two groups, groups over 40 will be split into three groups. You must have enough adults with you to ensure that all groups are supervised.    

This is a suggestion:

  • 0-2 years      =       1 adult to 3 children
  • 2-3 years      =       1 adult to 4 children
  • 3-7 years      =       1 adult to 8 children
  • 7 years +      =       2 adults for up to 20 children/young people

and one additional staff member for every additional 10    children/young people.

Coach parking: There is no designated parking area for coaches. Coaches need to drop school parties off at Fulton House where a member of Egypt Centre staff will meet you and walk you over to the Museum. The coach can return to Fulton House at a pre-arranged pick-up time. The walk from the coach to the museum is pedestrianised.   

Entrance: There are two entrances to the museum. The main entrance for school groups is through the ground floor Gift Shop entrance. Both are wheelchair accessible.

The Museum: The public area of the museum consists of 2 galleries, (The House of Life on the first floor and The House of Death on the ground floor), an education area is also used as a seating area for schools to eat lunch (needs to be pre-booked) and a gift-shop.  Each gallery contains cabinets of various designs and sizes, mostly wall-fitted around the perimeter.  Running is not permitted in the museum.

Health and Safety Briefing: When your school arrives at the museum, they will be given a Health and Safety briefing in our Educational Area on the first floor of the Taliesin building.

This briefing will brief both children and staff of the general health and safety procedures

  • Fire evacuation procedure / emergency evacuation procedure,
  • Museum code of conduct while in the Museum,
  • Location of amenities (eg. Toilets),
  • COVID-19 Safety Information.

Stairs: There are stairs linking the ground and first floor. There is a lift connecting both floors but are not usable during fire evacuation.

Toilets: There are toilet facilities on the first floor (male/female/disabled with baby changing facilities) and additional two gender neutral cubicles on the ground floor.

Hands-on activities: The activities for schools are hands-on and include: mummification on a dummy-mummy, dressing-up, using play-dough and artefact handling. Appropriate advice will be given about handling ancient objects, which includes wearing gloves provided. Visitors will be expected to take suitable care and attention when handling objects, for their own safety and for the preservation of the object.  If any visitor has an allergy or wishes not to come into contact with a certain material (e.g. play-dough), please tell us in advance. All equipment is monitored daily for safety (we do not keep written records).  Where national standards exist, the activity equipment conforms to those standards.

The Gift Shop: Groups are welcome to visit the gift shop, however, this may take away from your activity time. We offer a goody-bag facility with items pre-chosen by the teacher/group leader. Some items not suitable for very young children so advice for age appropriate items can be given by the Gift Shop Manager. The cost per goody-bag is decided by the teachers/group leaders and they will be ready at the end of the visit for you to give out to the children.

Feedback: We will provide a feedback form at the end of your visit. This is a requirement of your booking.
