This pottery object is 16cm long. It in the tradition of the 1st Intermediate Period to Middle Kingdom offering trays with model food upon them, several of which can be seen in the downstairs gallery. Such trays were probably manufactured to provide for the deceased. 

This particular one is in the shape of a courtyard or well with 4 steps leading down. A number of stone Old Kingdom offering trays also have this feature. This may perhaps suggest a link with sacred lakes, for example, that in the Valley temple of Menkaure. 

This item was originally part of the Rustafjaell collection purchased by Wellcome in 1906.
