Daniela Rosenow (Tell Basta Project)

‘The House of Bastet: Work on the Tell Basta-Project at Bubastis’.

The city of Bubastis is most famous for its temple dedicated to the goddess Bastet and the annual festival which took place in her honour and described by Herodotus. Since 1991 the Tell Basta-Project has been excavating this site, for the first 15 years focussing on studying the remains of the Great Temple. During recent years the Project has started to explore the areas directly east and south of the temple where, following Herodotus’ description of the ancient city, the actual settlement of Bubastis was situated. First excavations revealed the remains of Roman, Ptolemaic and Late Period structures of both domestic and semi-official nature. The talk will summarise the work of the Tell Basta-Project, giving an overview of the site and present our latest results.

Daniela Rosenow (Prosiect Tell Basta)

‘The House of Bastet: Work on the Tell Basta-Project at Bubastis’.

Mae dinas Bubastis fwyaf enwog am ei theml a gysegrir i’r dduwies Bastet a’r ŵyl flynyddol a gynhaliwyd er anrhydedd iddi ac a ddisgrifiwyd gan Herodotus. Ers 1991 mae Prosiect Tell Basta wedi bod yn cloddio’r safle, gan ganolbwyntio am y 15 mlynedd gyntaf ar astudio gweddillion y Deml Fawr. Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diweddar bu’r Prosiect yn dechrau archwilio’r ardaloedd yn union i orllewin a de’r deml lle, yn ôl disgrifiad Herodotus o’r hen ddinas, y lleolwyd aneddiad Bubastis ei hun. Yn ystod y cloddfeydd cyntaf, datgelwyd gweddillion strwythurau o’r Cyfnod Rhufeinig, y Cyfnod Ptolemaidd a’r Cyfnod Hwyr o natur ddomestig a lled-swyddogol. Bydd y sgwrs yn amlinellu gwaith y Prosiect Tell Basta, gan roi golwg gyffredinol o’r safle a bydd yn cyflwyno ein canlyniadau diweddaraf.
