AB31

AB31Earring with mother of pearl Coptic cross. The cross is very much like an Egyptian ankh, though the piece at the base recalls the Egyptian hieroglyph for a woman giving birth. Indeed, Woolley  (1907) saw a similarity in form between some Coptic crosses and some fertility figurines.

The earring is probably from Abydos. This is very similar to two earrings featured in Petrie ‘Objects of Daily Use’ plate 10.

Gift from University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
