Large stone votive stela. The upper part commemorates a royal donation to the temple of Montu at Medamud. On the left are the deities of Medamud: the falcon headed Montu in two forms with his consort Retawy and possibly Harpocrates (the temple was dedicated to Montu, Retawy and Harpocrates). The king who stands between them is performing the ritual of Offering the Field, which is represented as the king presenting the hieroglyph of the field. This ritual accompanied the gift of land to the temple estate. Votive stelae like this were set up in the courtyards of temples. Montu was an Egyptian god of war. 1st century B.C. to 1st century A.D.
