Fragment of statue of a stone sem-priest statue with pleated sleeves and with three lines of hieroglyphs on the reverse. 17 x 15.5 x 7.5cms

The first line mentions the Theban triad; Mut, Khons and Amun and is thus probably from Thebes . The last line of the inscription reads: ‘God’s Father, Beloved of the god, Master of secrets in heaven, on earth and in the netherworld, sem priest in…’. The style is of the 19th Dynasty.

Published in Malek et al 1999, ‘Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Statues, Reliefs and Paintings’ VIII, Part II 801-650-463.

Purchased by Wellcome at auction 1919. The Wellcome slip reads: ”One Egyptian limestone fragment, showing bust in relief, and with Egyptian characters on back 6 3/4” x 5 3/4 ” St 27/5/19 Lot 408.  

The title ‘God’s Father’ can have various meanings, including a royal connection, but in the New Kingdom it was a priestly title.
