Flat painted coffin face. The portrait dates to the Roman Period of Egypt (1st-3rd centuries AD) and is from Hawara. Portraits like this mainly come from the Fayum region, an area settled by Greek and then Roman immigrants. They appear to represent the elite of society.

It is possible that such paintings were originally displayed in the home, but when found they had been used as mummy masks.
