EC2992 small resin heads with nemes headdress (sphinx’s). These have ‘NEO7’ marked on the reverse. The original is in the British Museum (EA 54.678) and holds a captive. It is from Garstang’s excavations at Abydos and dates to the Middle Kingdom (Pharaonen und Fremde. Dynastien im Dunkel, 1994, no. 362). A number of copies seem to have been made. The British Museum has an example given to it in 1909 (EA 48999). Two copies were sold at the MacGregor sales of 1922 (lot 716). Since these are a pair, and as Sir Henry Wellcome purchased other items from this MacGregor sale, it seems that these may be EC299. The Egypt Centre items were displayed in The Face of Egypt Exhibition at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in 1997 (Face of Egypt Catalogue Number 43).
