W1377

Painted plaster of man, a tomb owner, with lotus flower seated in front of a loaded table. The piece is in a wooden frame measuring 35.9 by 32 cm.

The painting has a squared grid designed to help the artist in placing the parts of the body in the correct place.  Early New Kingdom. Originally part of the Rustafjaell collection purchased by Wellcome in 1906.

A similar piece can be seen at the Petrie Museum (UC28723 note the same treatment of the chair). The Petrie Museum pieces which seem to come from the same Rustafjaell lot (UC28723 and UC28722 do not wear jewellery, like ours). The Waters Art gallery piece (32.2 has a similar pot as ours.)
